TOPIC: MAKING YOUR MARRIAGE WORK (Part 4)

TEXT: “Discretion will preserve you, understanding will keep you(Pro.2:11)

The only way to make marriage work is to work at it. If you don’t work at it, it will never work out. Marriage is a lifetime project and there is no end in view until ‘death do us part’. Let me show you eight things you need to start doing to make you marriage work out: (1) you must see your marriage working out. 

The way you see your marriage turning out is the way it will eventually turn out. Develop a mental picture of a peaceful, blissful and prosperous marriage. If all you see about your spouse is bad, problematic and an uninteresting person, well, that’s all you are going to get. Remember the saying ‘what you see is what you get’ if you don’t like what you are seeing in your marriage, don’t change the set, change the channel. (2) Don’t neglect doing little things that makes your marriage sizzle. Doing little things can make a big difference! Try taking your family to the beach once in a while, take your wife to dinner, or to the movie. Create magic moments. Do something out of your daily routine and break the circle of boredom in your marriage. (3) You must have a ‘stick to it ability’. We are a dispensable society; what doesn’t perform satisfactorily will be replaced rather than repaired. And so people tend to hop on and off marriages when they are bored, discontented stressed out or get a better offer. However research has shown that the more we do that the worse we get. If you can’t find happiness in our current marriage, there is little or no chance that we will in the next one. So stick to it and make it work (4) what God has joined together let no money put asunder. There is no over emphasizing the role money play in making and marring marriages. The problem is not the presence or absence of money but our attitude towards money in marriage that matters. In a marriage that must work, couples must have a financial plan; the partners must sit down to determine how much of their money must be spent on what. Furthermore, the partners must operate individual accounts to cater for their personal needs and operate a joint account to cater for the need of the household. In the sight of God nothing should be strong enough to separate you and your spouse. God intends that working and growing through the obstacles and opportunities of your marriage, you will become a better partner and end up building a happier marriage.
