FAMILY WEEK SERIES
TOPIC:
MAKING YOUR MARRIAGE WORK (Part 5)
TEXT: “Discretion will preserve you, understanding
will keep you”(Pro.2:11)
Finally,
your marriage can work! God wants your story to be a marital success, but you
must be ready to work hard to make it happen. Yesterday we started talking
about eight things that makes your marriage work:
(5) Be a lifetime forgiver.
Marriage is a relationship between two lifetime forgivers. No matter how much
your spouse claim to love you, there will be time of disagreements where you
throw tantrums and say things that you don’t really mean to each other. After
the matter might have died down, excuse your spouse for whatever he/she might
have done and stop being angry about the same issue. No matter what it is, it
is forgivable! Let go the pain and let God heal your wounds. But how long? You
ask. Jesus said “Seventy time seven times”(Matt18:22). (6) Keep love alive by
keeping trust alive. Trust is the cornerstone of every marital relationship.
Love is built on trust. Everyone start out by having deep feelings for someone,
but this feeling of love is strengthened by deep assurance that makes one feel safe
with ones partner. Both men and women have their fears in marriage. This goes
particularly for the women folks. They always want to be rest assured that they
are loved, catered for, and protected from any form of aggression. You have the
responsibility to provide this assurance by the things you do and say to your
spouse. (7) Set the limit for external influences in your marriage. Marriage is
exclusively between two matured people. Family and friends should not decide or
determine how you live within your matrimonial home. A situation where the
man’s brother insults and assaults their brother’s wife and the man sees
nothing wrong with it is highly unacceptable. In my opinion, some in-laws
should be ‘out-lawed’ in some homes. The scriptures enjoined both the man and
the woman to leave their families and stick together.(Gen2:24;Ps45:10). So set
limits! (8) Talk, talk, talk. Lastly we should learn to communicate.
Communication breakdown is the reason many marriages have broken down. Little
misunderstanding eventually blew over into emotional volcanic eruptions could
have been managed by simply talking about it. But talking isn’t as simple as it
sounds. Communication could should be deliberate, it should be timely, it
should be done with the intention to resolve conflict not create more
conflicts. And whatever you say should bring your spouse closer and not set you
apart. Learn to say this wonderful words; ‘I am sorry’, ‘I didn’t mean it that
way’, ‘I love you so much’, ‘I didn’t know you will feel that way’, ‘let me
understand your point of view’ etc. by all means, keep the line of
communication open in your marriage. I pray God’s peace on your marriage in
JESUS name. Amen. Remain blessed!
