It’s been nine days since Justin Bieber announced that he’d be canceling his “Purpose World Tour” to spend some more time, as he told TMZ, “resting, getting some relaxation,” and riding “some bikes.” A day later, on June 25, TMZ reported that the real reason behind the cancellation was that the 23-year-old singer had “rededicated his life to Christ.” Bieber, the same man who was arrested for driving under the influence, drag racing, and resisting arrest at 19; and who once climbed atop ancient Mayan ruins in Mexico and mooned the site’s security staff, has had an interesting relationship with religion over the course of his career. While he’s always said he was a man of god, his behavior has often suggested otherwise. Despite these personal setbacks, one man has always stayed by his side to help keep him on the straight and narrow-ish: Pastor Carl Lentz.
Over these past nine days, Bieber and Lentz have been spending a significant amount of time together—be it in person while eating lunch at Mastro’s or driving around Los Angeles together, or via their frequent chats over FaceTime, the pair is reported to be “nearly inseparable.” Lentz has been a go-to pastor for the young, beautiful, and famous for years as one of the leaders of Hillsong Church, hanging out (and praising the Lord) with people like Bieber, Selena Gomez, Kevin Durant, Kendall Jenner, and more. His influence has become infectious, and has moved well beyond those who know him as their Pastor Carl. He was profiled in GQ back in 2015, which noted his belief that things like abortion and homosexuality are sins, a not-so-subtle reminder even the hippest of pastors are still, well, pastors. He’s also had sit-down interviews with Oprah Winfrey and been on the show and [ show and The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore (R.I.P.).
